Second single from Adrian Crowley’s album ‘The Watchful Eye Of The Stars’.

“I am an incessant doodler. The stars of the video for Bread And Wine were made with a scalpel, pen and a drawing book. And they were captured on my kitchen table. Even though I consider myself to be a patient individual, I didn’t feel like going through the painstaking process of making a stop-animation. So, instead, I went an easier route and made a kind of lo-fi, 21st century parlour cut-out puppet show. I like to think of this video as a cross between The Wickerman and Bosco. Although, I’m aware the Bosco reference will be lost on anyone who didn’t watch afternoon TV in 1980s Ireland. It was a curious thing to see the scenarios unfold there on my kitchen table, late one windy night. Armed with a simple hand-held camera and a few sticks of cardboard, I watched it all come together. The protagonist in Bread And Wine bears more than a passing resemblance to myself, which wasn’t an accident. But it’s quite spooky, in a way, how just a few dots and lines on a page can conjure someone up. Or something. All those characters spying at the window; like ghosts from someone’s past… they all seem to have an eerie and playful presence.” Adrian Crowley

Best known as one-half of acclaimed duo The Kills, when she’s not moonlighting as Baby Ruthless, the gnarly lead singer of blues-punk foursome The Dead Weather, Mosshart is a forever moving force. Over the years she’s collaborated with everyone from her Dead Weather bandmate Jack White to the Arctic Monkeys, Primal Scream, Gang Of Four, Cage The Elephant, Foo Fighters,  James Williamson and Mini Mansions.

Releasing the first solo single of her already impressive career. “Rise” is a searing, slow-burner recorded for, and prominently featured in, today’s final episode of FacebookWatch drama Sacred Lies. The track was recorded in Los Angeles with producer Lawrence Rothman, and is available on Domino Records.

Mosshart hunkered down at her Nashville home and has used this period of social isolation to teach herself video editing, pulling together some of her favorite footage from a recent visit to Los Angeles and editing it into a video for the song. Watch her self-produced video for “Rise” below.

Sacred Lies: The Singing Bones is produced by Blumhouse Television and Raelle Tucker (True Blood, The Returned, Jessica Jones), starring Juliette Lewis, Ryan Kwanten, Jordan Alexander, and Kristin Bauer van Straten. “Rise”, a throughline in the story, is performed by Jordan Alexander (“Elsie”) in the first episode.
For Mosshart, releasing music under her name is a new experience but an entirely thrilling one. It makes sense: she’s been compiling a bank of unreleased music for more than a decade now. Back in 2013, Mosshart first wrote the initial sketch of “Rise,” which finds the singer intoning, “When the sky is falling/ and the sun is black/when the sky is coming down on ya/baby don’t look back/we will rise.” Recalls Mosshart: “I didn’t ever forget it. I remember right where I was when I wrote it, sitting at my desk in London, missing someone badly.”
For a multi-disciplinary artist like Mosshart—whose paintings have been shown in galleries across the world, and who recently published her first book, CAR MA, a collection of her art, photography and writing that doubles as a love letter to automobiles—working on a variety of projects, now including her own music, is exactly how she likes it.  Currently, she is working with Jamie Hince on the next Kills record and dreams of the day in the hopefully not so distant future, (pandemic-willing) when they’ll be back on the road with exciting new music to share.

Written late last year, “It Ain’t Water” was recorded with Alain Johannes (Queens of the Stone Age, PJ Harvey). Mosshart had been sitting on the track for quite some time, and every time the singer found herself battling a bout of writer’s block, she’d pick up her guitar and sing it.

Alison on working with Alain Johannes: “Working with Alain on ‘It Ain’t Water’ was a blast. He’s such a talent and such a kind person. His mind is wide open. He understands and sees the beauty in imperfection, magic moments, accidents- the soulful human stuff, and the spirited super-human hard to explain stuff that makes a song great. Working with him was an honor, and also, hot damn he can play any instrument like a champ… like he invented the instrument himself. Alain Johannes IS music.”

Praise for Alison Mosshart and “Rise”:

“It’s hard to believe that Alison Mosshart, of the Kills and the Dead Weather, hasn’t made a solo single until now. “Rise” stays close to the bluesy foreboding of her other bands. A thumping drum and a bare-bones guitar shuffle surge into visions of dire times and a promise to outlast them.” – The New York Times

“a bluesy slow-burner packed with the singer’s signature yowl” – Entertainment Weekly

“The guitar-driven track slow burns, growing into a blast at the chorus. Despite the dark tone, there’s an uplifting feel to the lyrics…sounds just like the type of words many of us need to hear right now.” – SPIN

“The song is right up the sleazy punk-blues alley that Alison has long excelled at” – Brooklyn Vegan

“”Rise” exhibits the fierce energy and soul of anything she’s been a part of thus far, filling the track’s four-minute runtime with powerful vocals.” – FLOOD Magazine

‘Yabaal’ from Dur Dur Band of Mogadishu Somalia – Volume 1, Volume 2 & Previously Unreleased Tracks by Dur-Dur Band originally performed 1986

Watching this joyful hand camera video of Dur Dur Band is indicative that it is impossible to stand still whilst listening to the Somalian funk. It’s too easy for us to forget that before the civil war, 1980s Mogadishu was a thriving cultural hub. It is our loss that, in their heyday, we in the West didn’t recognise the sensational Dur-Dur Band. Dur-Dur‘s doctrine was the fusion of traditional Somali music with whatever rhythms would make people dance: Funk, Reggae, Soul, Disco and New Wave were mixed effortlessly with Banaadiri beats, Daantho and spiritual Saar music. The concoction was explosive and when they stormed the Mogadishu music scene in 1986 with their very first hit single, ‘Yabaal‘, featuring vocals from Sahra Dawo, it was clear that a new meteorite had crash-landed in Somalia.  Abdulahi Ahmed, author of Somali Folk Dances explained: “Yabaal is a traditional song, but the way it was played and recorded was like nothing else we had heard before, it was new to us”.

The following notes on Dur-Dur Band were written by Analog Africa:

Analog Africa founder Samy Ben Redjeb arrived in Mogadishu in November of 2016, he was informed by his host that he would have to be accompanied at all times by an armed escort while in the country. The next morning, a neighbour and former security guard put on a military uniform, borrowed an AK-47 from somewhere and escorted him to Via Roma, an historical street in the heart of Hamar-Weyne, the city’s oldest district. Although previous Analog Africa releases have demonstrated a willingness to go more than the extra air-mile to track down the stories behind the music, the trip to Mogadishu was a musical journey of a different kind. It was the culmination of an odyssey that had started many years earlier.

In 2007 John Beadle, a Milwaukee-based musicologist and owner of the much loved Likembe blog, uploaded a cassette he had been handed twenty years earlier by a Somalian student. The post was titled ‘Mystery Somali Funk‘ and it was, in Samy’s own words, “some of the deepest funk ever recorded”. The cassette seemed to credit these dense, sonorous tunes to the legendary Iftin Band. But initial contact with Iftin’s lead singer suggested that the ‘mystery funk’ may have actually been the work of their chief rival, Dur-Dur, a young band from the 80s.

Back then, Mogadishu had been a very different place.
On the bustling Via Roma, people from all corners of society would gather at the Bar Novecento and Cafe Cappucino, watch movies at the famous Supercinema, and eat at the numerous pasta hang-outs or the traditional restaurants that served Bariis Maraq, a somali Beef Stew mixed with delicious spiced rice. The same street was also home to Iftinphone and Shankarphone, two of the city’s best known music shop. Located opposite each other, they were the centre of Somalia’s burgeoning cassette distribution network. Both shops, run by members of the legendary Iftin Band, would become first-hand witnesses to the meteoric rise of Dur- Dur, a rise that climaxed in April of 1987 with the release of Volume 2, their second album.

The first single ‘Diinleya‘ had taken Somalian airwaves by storm in a way rarely seen before or since. The next single, ‘Dab’, had an even greater impact, and the two hits had turned them into the hottest band in town. In addition to their main gig as house band at the legendary Jubba Hotel, Dur-Dur had also been asked to perform the music for the play “Jascyl Laba Ruux Mid Ha Too Rido” (May one of us fall in love) at Mogadishu’s national theatre. The play was so successful that the management had been forced to extend the run by a month, throwing the theatre’s already packed schedule into complete disarray; and each night, as soon as the play had finished, Dur-Dur had to pack their instruments into a Volkswagen T1 tour bus that would shuttle them across town in time for their hotel performance.

The secrets to Dur-Dur‘s rapid success is inextricably linked to the vision of Isse Dahir, founder and keyboard player of the band. Isse’s plan was to locate some of the most forward-thinking musicians of Mogadishu’s buzzing scene and lure them into Dur-Dur. Ujeeri, the band’s mercurial bass player was recruited from Somali Jazz and drummer extraordinaire Handal previously played in Bakaka Band. These two formed the backbone of Dur-Dur and would become one of Somalia’s most extraordinary rhythm sections.

Isse also added his two younger brothers to the line-up: Abukar Dahir Qassin was brought in to play lead guitar, and Ahmed Dahir Qassin was hired as a permanent sound engineer, a first in Somalia and one of the reasons that Dur-Dur became known as the best-sounding band in the country.

On their first two albums, Volume 1 and Volume 2, three different singers traded lead-vocal duties back and forth. Shimaali, formerly of Bakaka Band, handled the Daantho songs, a Somalian rhythm from the northern part of the country that bears a striking resemblance to reggae; Sahra Dawo, a young female singer, had been recruited from Somalia’s national orchestra, the Waaberi Band. Their third singer, the legendary Baastow, whose nickname came from the italian word ‘pasta’ due to the spaghetti-like shape of his body, had also been a vocalist with the Waaberi Band, and had been brought into Dur-Dur due to his deep knowledge of traditional Somali music, particularly Saar, a type of music intended to summon the spirits during religious rituals. These traditional elements of Dur-Dur‘s repertoire sometimes put them at odds with the manager of the Jubba Hotel who once told Baastow “I am not going to risk having Italian tourists possessed by Somali spirits. Stick to disco and reggae“.

‘Yabaal’ was one of the songs that resurfaced on the Likembe blog, and it became the symbolic starting point of this project.

It initially seemed that Dur-Dur‘s music had only been preserved as a series of murky tape dubs and YouTube videos, but after Samy arrived in Mogadishu he eventually got to the heart of Mogadishu’s tape-copying network – an analogue forerunner of the internet file-sharing that helped to keep the flame of this music alive through the darkest days of Somalia’s civil strife – and ended up finding some of the band’s fabled master tapes, long thought to have disappeared.

This triple LP / double CD reissue of the band’s first two albums – the first installment in a three-part series dedicated to Dur-Dur Band – represents the first fruit of Analog Africa‘s long labours to bring this extraordinary music to the wider world. Remastered from the best available audio sources, these songs have never sounded better. Some thirty years after they first made such a splash in the Mogadishu scene, they have been freed from the wobble and tape-hiss of second and third generation cassette dubs, to reveal a glorious mix of polychromatic organs, nightclub-ready rhythms and hauntingly soulful vocals.

In addition to two previously unreleased tracks, the music is accompanied by extensive liner notes, featuring interviews with original band members, documenting a forgotten chapter of Somalia’s cultural history. Before the upheaval in the 1990s that turned Somalia into a war-zone, Mogadishu, the white pearl of the Indian Ocean, had been one of the jewels of eastern Africa, a modern paradise of culture and commerce. In the music of the Dur-Dur band – now widely available outside of Somalia – we can still catch a fleeting glimpse of that golden age.

As part of Light in the Attic’s on-going 7″ covers series we celebrate the song “Miracles” (written by Johnnie Frierson. The a-side includes Bill Callahan & Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy (feat. Ty Segall) covering “Miracles,” while the flip-side includes Johnnie’s original version, taken from our reissue of his album Have You Been Good To Yourself.

Johnnie Frierson was a soul-singer/songwriter on the Memphis scene of the 1960s, perhaps best known for his role in The Drapels, though he played parts behind the scenes in soul, funk and gospel productions for Stax and Hi Records. His career was interrupted in 1968 by the U.S. Army. Following a stint in Vietnam, he returned to Memphis, making music only intermittently (making a single in 1975 with the gospel group The Whole Truth), while working a variety of different jobs and raising a family. In the early 90s, he got involved with music again, hosting a gospel radio show and selling cassettes of his new home-recorded songs in different places around town. According to his daughter, this was a hard time in Johnnie’s life, during which he was no doubt processing the painful experiences he’d had in Vietnam and afterwards. The songs show remarkable optimism in the face of this information — perhaps none more so than “Miracles,” with its warm and emphatic refrain:

    You can do ‘em
    have faith
    you are human
    only human
and human beings, they do miracles

Johnnie’s version, a guitar and vocals performance, thrills with its uncoated R’n’B and gospel inspirations. For Ty’s take on the song, the ever-darkening realities of the present-day require a different sonic platform — and so, via the riffs of the original, he takes the song to a darker area of the blues, which, driven by the funky soundings of the Rhythm King drum machine and scudded with filth-toned guitars, synths and saxes (sketchily blown by Bitchin Bajas’ Rob Frye), evokes the raw beats of Sly, the exotic tinge of Stevie and the sanctified elevation of Al Green. This clearly delights Bill and Bonny, who deliver from deep down, with Bonny supplying all the voices in the backing choir with true fervor and Bill hitting a couple of notes that make our hair stand straight up every time. A low-down, slinking celebration of our bottomless grace.

    'Coucou'

“Coucou”, the quasi-Californian lead track, with its soft bassline and beaming guitars, sets the tone for Banane Bleue perfectly. With emotional connections and misunderstandings at its heart, it details the end of a failing relationship whilst exploring the nuances of the French language. “I hate this word, “coucou” (which loosely translates as ‘hey there’ in French)” Frànçois Marry notes, “because, for me, it expresses a form of indifferent, slightly fake naivety. What’s even more absurd is when it comes from someone with whom you were once madly in love.”

Banane Bleue (French for “Blue Banana”) is a nomadic and truly European record, hailing from rented workspaces in some of the continent’s key cities – Berlin, Athens and Paris – and recorded with instruments that were often borrowed from likeminded musicians. Written solely by Frànçois Marry himself, close collaborator and Weird World artist Jaakko Eino Kalevi was enlisted for production duties whilst Renaud Letang (Feist, Gonzales, Connan Mockasin) mixed the album.

The title of the album is taken from the ‘blue banana’ concept, a geographical theory that groups together a corridor of Europe’s biggest cities, originally conceived in the 1980s. The theory states that the blurring of these cities’ boundaries has resulted in the formation of one massive, interconnected megalopolis. Expanding on the theory, Frànçois poetised it, picturing a luminescent blue banana shape that you can see from space with vibrant, ethereal currents that surround and bind us. It explores common cultural and romantic ground, creating an album full of missed meetings and misunderstandings.

On the theory, Frànçois notes: “I have often asked myself what my relationship history would be like if I had been born on another continent. Our idea of love, which comes from the 18th and 19th centuries, is ingrained in the walls and aromas of cities, cafes, nights out in bars, text messages, artificial lights, romantic getaways and city breaks; as if European electricity emitted some kind of romantic scent.” This electric grid of romance is personified in the ‘Blue banana’ concept.

». Frànçoi Marry

Talking about the song, he says: “2019’s satanic mills – zero hours, suicide nets, universal credit, cheap labour. The blue-white glow of the factories out on the gyratory and the plastic clad office blocks of the town centre. I wanted to strip the romance back and look at what makes this country run, what makes it tick. The factories are hungry and it’s you they want. I wanted it to sound like the open road but there’s just too much barbed wire around it. The same every night. You do what you have to do. Knackered synths and a Floyd rose. Hope you enjoy it, OTP 2019 x”.

One True Pairing is “the angry northern Springsteen record that I’d always wanted to make” says Tom Fleming, “it’s neo-heartland rock”. These “heartlands” are the moors above Bradford or Cumbernauld, “places where people live their whole lives and do these things and succeed and fail.” Within this there’s a continuation of the exploration of masculinity that made his former band so unique. As well as being deeply personal, OTP has a wider political resonance, he believes that class is entirely discounted from the current conversation about inclusivity and privilege. In its 11 songs of discordant guitar and aggressive synth Fleming channels his discontent with Britain in 2019 and a “feeling of directionless rage and cheatedness which hasn’t gone away.”

Some words from him to you…

We’ve all been dreaming of escape and having fantasies about what was once mundane. I’m trying to capture a rain-sodden trip through ring roads and retail parks, lights smeared across car windows, and find love and inspiration in others after such a long time trapped in my own head. This track stuck out like a sore thumb in what I’m writing now but I thought it was worth pursuing. I hope the whole thing is as romantic as it is barbed, and evocative of throwing all your things away and disappearing forever.

Clarence Clarity works “I’m Not Afraid” into a glitching and twisted bombastic pop song whilst Ed Nash plays with Fleming’s recognisable baritone vocal taking it to deeper and stranger places.

One True Pairing is an album shaped by class frustration and self-despair and there is a continuation of the exploration of masculinity that made Wild Beasts so unique. As well as being deeply personal, OTP has a wider political resonance. “This country is going through a terrible moment and if you listen to the art nobody seems to give a shit,” Fleming says emphatically. He believes that class is entirely discounted from the current conversation about inclusivity and privilege. In its 11 songs of discordant guitar and aggressive synth Fleming channels his discontent with Britain in 2019 and a “feeling of directionless rage and cheatedness which hasn’t gone away.”

This idea and the expanding themes – male identity, class, taste – are the cornerstones of One True Pairing, “I wanted to write about the real world,” asserts Fleming. “This is a song about hope, about getting beaten down and getting up again, more wide-eyed and full of wonder than you ever were before. It’s about doing wrong and then seeing things for what they really are. It’s a love song, or as close as I’ll ever want to get to one. The name of the whole project is something of a savage joke, but this time I mean it 100% sincerely. Wear the scars proudly, wave ‘em in the faces of people who don’t, will never understand what they mean. One True Pairing, 2019, hope you enjoy it.”

Oscar-nominated composer and songwriter Owen Pallett is sharing “Paragon Of Order,” the first in a series of videos animated by Eric Kostiuk Williams. The song is from Owen’s latest album Island (Domino / Secret City), and the second video will be released on December 14th.  Owen describes the two songs as, “an extroverted coda to an introverted album.”

Owen Pallett – Tiny Desk Home Concert

Almost entirely acoustic, Island begins with 13 darkened chords, and was recorded live at Abbey Road Studios with the London Contemporary Orchestra. The introduction is sound of waking up – alone, and on the shore of a strange land. What follows is a shimmering and luscious orchestral album that draws across the full breadth of Pallett’s discography, from Heartland’s Technicolor to the glittering, fingerpicked guitar that marked Pallett’s first records with their trio, Les Mouches.

Island is about being alive, asking why, and all the most hideous stuff of life. The songs don’t divulge the answers.  “I don’t know what’s happening next, guys,” Pallett warns.

For the first time, Pallett – who has a lifetime of classical training – created an album without brooding over the way it might be performed on stage. This wasn’t easy:  Pallett’s initial reputation was founded on their live virtuosity, playing violin for groups including Arcade Fire and the Hidden Cameras, and a solo fiddle and loop-pedal act, under the name Final Fantasy. Pallett’s second release as Final Fantasy, 2006’s He Poos Clouds, was awarded the inaugural Polaris Music Prize.

In addition to Pallett’s Grammy award-winning work with Arcade Fire, Pallett’s commissions have included string, brass and orchestral arrangements for Frank Ocean, Caribou, the Last Shadow Puppets, the National, The Mountain Goats, Christine and the Queens, R.E.M., Linkin Park, Sigur Rós, Taylor Swift, and the Pet Shop Boys. Since the release of In Conflict (2014), Pallett has earned an Oscar nomination for their film scoring work on Spike Jonze’s Her, and an Emmy for Sølve Sundsbø’s Fourteen Actors Acting. Their score for Matt Wolf’s Spaceship Earth, a documentary about a crew who spent two years quarantined inside a replica of Earth’s ecosystem called BIOSPHERE 2.

Last seen a couple of years back on his debut long-player Stop Lying, Raf Rundell emerges from his Forest Hill bunker with Monsterpiece, a joyful, larger than life, good-time party anthem.

His first release for Heavenly Recordings, the former 2 Bear, renowned DJ, and all round, man-about-town, said of this first taster from his forthcoming second album:

His first release for Heavenly Recordings, the former 2 Bear, renowned DJ, and all round, man-about-town, said of this first taster from his forthcoming second album:

“Time for new JAMS. Under the light of a silver moon we work on our Monsterpieces. One Blockhead, one Stepkid, a Showboy and a Culpepper. Never knowingly undersoul’d we step unblinkingly into the future. O.M.DAYS.”

A beautifully lithe, effortless and sophisticated South London steeped Balearic treat, it’s no coincidence ‘Monsterpiece’ possesses the idiosyncratic funk feel of peak time Blockheads given Ian Dury’s former guitar slinger Chas Jankel was roped in to provide his distinctive touch.

A chance meeting with Chas led to a blossoming friendship and it wasn’t long before he came to the studio one day proclaiming to have something for Raf. “I tried hard to be Ian Dury,” explained Raf, “but realised I couldn’t. So I tried my best in a different way, and here we are.”

Featuring a striking Keith Haring meets the Green Man inspired cover from acclaimed artist and long-time collaborator Ben Edge, Monsterpiece also includes vocal contributions from Joel Culpepper and Show Boy.

Earlier this year we were dreaming of a better future. Sequestered on a hilltop a plan floated over on the air. We would name the first full moon after summer solstice 2020 the O.M.Days moon. We approached a landowner who already had a small Viking encampment in his grounds. Could we..? Yes we could. We are still unsure what happened. Perhaps it was a profound magical experience. Perhaps it was a load of wankers from London who’d been indoors too long let loose on a midsummer night. Either way our intentions were sincere and for the good of all living things.

Album release on Heavenly featuring guest appearances from Chas Jankel, Lias Saoudi, Teri Walker, Andy Jenkins and Man & The Echo.

Last seen a couple of years back on his debut long-player Stop Lying, Raf has also shared Ample Change (ft. Lias Saoudi), the second track to be taken off the album following Monsterpiece on which he roped in the legendary Chas Jankel to provide his distinctive touch.

Featuring on the cover a striking Keith Haring meets the Green Man image from acclaimed artist and long-time collaborator Ben Edge, the picture wasinspired by the folk tale of the giant of Dawson, who is both male & female, human and vegetation and lived in the imagination of Dawson’s Hill, a stretch of South London parkland a stones throw away from Dawson’s Heights, the flats featured on the cover of Raf’s debut Stop Lying.

Edge and Rundell, for reasons they can’t entirely comprehend, concocted a rite which took place the first full moon after this year’s summer solstice (the results of which can be seen in the short film trailer for the album). This involved the giant – also known as Tommy Hill Figure – being created on Dawson’s Hill.

Produced by E-Whizz and Ragz himself, “brush u” is a vibrant track which the north Londoner uses to detail a situationship. The difference in feelings between Ragz and a lady are shown in the colourful but dimly-lit visuals where the artist remains in a state of blankness while a lady continues to dance on.

Louis Greenwood and Lawrence Hayes have gained some serious steam in recent years. They’ve co-crafted cuts for artists across a spectrum of genres. From studio sessions with Grammy-winning creative giant Skrillex, to Ninja Tune’s Park Hye Jin, and alt-indie enigma Chelou. Firmly establishing themselves as broad respected producers. Releases have come through Fort Romeau’s Cin Cin Records and Australian-based Beats Of No Nation and Silver Bear’s vast catalogue is the work of the discerning duo as they took the helm as A&Rs back in 2017, a label for tastemakers alike.

Electronic music has the magic ability to conjure up feelings and visuals and ‘Back To The Old Days’ does just this. It wasn’t crafted overnight. It started in Berlin, was finished in LA, and encapsulates the euphoric rave experiences that London gave the boys during their formative years.

It also nods back to WAC Arts College in London where Louis and Lawrence were tutors, working with creative, talented youths who were seeking something that mainstream education didn’t offer. The track cleverly features a vocal rip from an interview with one of the students airing his experiences.

Penchant for melodies, bouncy, emotive, with influences that can be traced to breaks, jungle and rave breakdowns ‘Back To The Old Days’ is the immersive escapism that we all love and need.

I went home and wrote this recalling the awkwardness and loneliness that comes with Christmas, I thought about the dysfunctional families pretending they didnt hate each other all over the world and how hard to ignore it was especially as that’s ultimately what I was trying to do myself. This year has been painful and I’m sure the holidays will be too, so my gift to you this year is an opportunity to wallow. Having said that I do wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and that the absolute headfuck we’ve all been through brings everyone together this year.
