The upcoming album reflects on generations and lifetimes of memory, speculating on how the spirit of our songs might be interpreted after we’re gone.

Armed with her 1978 Serge Modular, Prism Modular, and Ableton Push 3 in the circuit path, she recomposes a selection of American revival hymns, creating new works and reimagined versions for future generations. Earthly Pleasures is a fluent meditation on mortality and rebirth, amid numinous infinities of dimensional soundscapes.

Smugglers Way has announced its newest signing, Guedra Guedra, the electronic music project of Moroccan producer Abdellah M. Hassak. The sound of Guedra Guedra is a dazzling compound of visionary electronics and musical traditions drawn from across the continent of Africa. Smugglers Way, an imprint of Domino, will release Guedra Guedra’s second album MUTANT (mixed by Marta Salogni, mastered by Heba Kadry) on August 29th.

On MUTANT, Abdellah blends analogue synths and drum machines with field recordings from Morocco, Tanzania, Guinea, and more, gathered while traveling across the vast landmass. MUTANT explores themes of identity, Pan-Africanism, Afrofuturism, and decolonization, bridging the musical heritage of the continent with elements of techno, bass music, and dub. “I wanted to have a cultural sound that explored innovation with African and diasporic music alongside the vibes of rhythm and the vibes of bass,” says Abdellah.

Guedra Guedra has shared MUTANT’s hypnotic first single, “Drift of Drummer,” along with its accompanying music video, shot in Marrakech and directed by Romain Cherbonnier. Taking inspiration from the musical traditions of the town of Kouroussa in Guinea, “Drift of Drummer” foregrounds the djembé drum, a key instrument in West African music that was played in the fields to energize workers, with rhythms mirroring the sounds of labor. “African percussion is more than just music; it represents the heartbeat of life, from breathing and walking to the changing seasons and the pulse of the earth,” says Abdellah.

Domino Records has announced its latest signing, Upchuck, the incendiary Atlanta punk band composed of KT (vocals), Mikey Durham (guitar), Hoff (guitar), Ausar Ward (bass), and Chris Salado (vocals, drums). Alongside the news, the band has also shared their scorching new single, “Plastic,” produced and mixed by fellow Domino Publishing writer Ty Segall. In a two-minute blitz of scuzzy guitars and spitting vocals, “Plastic” contains the key to Upchuck’s ethos of authenticity: in a PVC world of hollowness and artificiality, you have to fight to find what’s real. “Algo me hace falta (‘something is missing’),” Chris howls on the Spanish-language bridge. The answer, exhorts KT, is to “know classics – know truths – know reason – know you.”

Upchuck burst into being in 2018 as a band of Atlanta skaters in their early 20s, fronted by the magnetic performer KT, and quickly became hometown heroes thanks to their uproarious live shows. 2022 saw the release of their debut full-length Sense Yourself on Brooklyn’s Famous Class Records, followed soon after by 2023’s Bite The Hand That Feeds, also produced by Ty Segall. Early singles like “Freaky” and “Facecard” won support from the likes of Iggy Pop and Henry Rollins, who both played tracks on their radio shows, as well as press attention for their “die-hard attitude” (Vogue) and “lightning-hot bursts of energy” (The Fader).

The burgeoning legend of Upchuck’s live show continued to spread internationally, with support tours alongside fellow Atlantan Faye Webster – who calls Upchuck her favorite band – Amyl & The Sniffers, Soul Glo, OSEES, and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, and an attention-grabbing slot at Coachella 2024. “Everything explodes,” wrote Rolling Stone after catching them at SXSW. “The club becomes a sonic cannon, set to maximum destruction. Every song hits this hard.”
