St. Patrick’s Festival 2021 premiered an innovative musical event featuring the poetry of James Joyce, produced by Matthew Nolan and Adrian Crowley.

The ever presence of Irish novelist James Joyce was emphasised by US president-elect Joe Biden quoting Joyce during his emotional farewell to his home state of Delaware ahead of being sworn-in as US president.

2021, Ireland’s finest contemporary musicians went on a journey to comprehend love and life from the map left by Joyce’s pen.

How does one start a tribute to the greatest wordsmith this island has ever known? The answer is obvious; stay true to the words. St Patrick’s Festival 2021 premiers an innovative evening of music and song at the Museum of Literature Ireland (MoLI) featuring the poetry of James Joyce, produced by Matthew Nolan and Adrian Crowley in collaboration with Lisa Hannigan, Sean Mac Erlaine, Kevin Murphy and Cora Venus Lunny.

James Joyce’s second and last book of poetry, Pomes Penyeach, was published in 1927. A collection of 12 poems and a tilly – making it a baker’s dozen – the book sold for one shilling (12 pennies) or 12 francs, so the poems were a penny each. Pomes is also a pun on pommes (the French for apple) as Joyce wanted the cover of the book to be the colour of his favourite apple, the Calville.

Most of the poems date from between 1912 and 1924 apart from ‘Tilly’, a re-working of his poem ‘Cabra’ which was written around the time of his mother’s death in 1903 when the family were living in Cabra. Many of the poems can be traced to specific biographical moments, but Joyce is not so much writing poems about moments in his life as using those biographical moments as vehicles for poetic ideas or images.

The project is spearheaded by Dublin based composer, curator and academic Matthew Nolan, who discovered Joyce’s book thirty years ago and has been ‘trying to find a means of expressing that world ever since’.

He enlisted the help of multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and composer Adrian Crowley to decipher this elegiac collection and an ‘astonishing musical world began to unfurl’.

Join some of Ireland’s finest contemporary musicians on a journey to comprehend love and life from the map left by Joyce’s pen.

Featuring: Adrian Crowley (vocals, piano, acoustic guitar & mellotron), Lisa Hannigan (vocals), Matthew Nolan (electric guitar), Sean Mac Erlaine (reeds & electronics), Cora Venus Lunny (violin & viola) and Kevin Murphy (cello).

Domino Publishing is very proud to have four of our writers nominated in six categories at the 2021 Grammy Awards.

Fontaines D.C. have been nominated for Best Rock Album for ‘A Hero’s Death’. This is the band’s first-ever Grammy nomination and comes on the heels of a #2 debut on the UK charts (behind only Taylor Swift), and some of the best reviews of any album released this year. Far from a re-hash of their swaggering 2019 debut (‘Dogrel’), ‘A Hero’s Death’ arrived battered and bruised – albeit beautiful, with songs that are patient, confident, and heady takes on the modern world and its great uncertainty. ‘A Hero’s Death’ was produced by Dan Carey (Black Midi, Bat For Lashes).

Big Thief have received two nominations for their single ‘Not’ in the Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance categories. ‘Not’ is from Big Thief’s fourth studio album ‘Two Hands’ which was released by 4AD, written by Adrianne Lenker, and produced by Andrew Sarlo. Described as the ‘Earth-Twin’ to the band’s previous album ‘U.F.O.F.’,  ‘Two hands’ dominated the end of year album lists with Spin naming it the Album of the year.

Devonté  Hynes has received two nominations for his work with the Third Coast Percussion in which he was composer and writer for the album ‘Fields‘. Devonté Hynes is being recognized in the categories for Best Engineered Album (Kyle Pyke, engineer ; Jesse Lewis & Kyle Pyke, mastering engineers) and Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance.

Thomas Bartlett co-wrote Bebel Gilberto’s album ‘Agora‘ which has received a nomination for Best Global Music Album. Released by PIAS,  this is the first album in six years from the Brazilian artist and documents three years of personal tragedy. Pitchfork expressly noted that Thomas Bartlett ‘helps color in the edges with understated electronic touches’ throughout the album.

Congratulations to all of these writers!

Join us to celebrate Parquet Courts’ 10th anniversary at Brooklyn’s Pioneer Works 10th December 2020

Parquet Courts have been praised as one of the decade’s essential bands. Over the years, they’ve released five acclaimed studio albums, countless EPs and singles, and played over a thousand shows.  Their influence reverberates not only through New York City’s music scene, but far beyond our shores. Lyrically, their songs have revealed a desperately prescient quality, as narratives of isolation, climate catastrophe, technological dependence, and police brutality pepper their body of work and have materialized years later in some of this decade’s darker moments. Yet through this all, the band’s positive calls to action continue to invigorate audiences to fight through their malaise and to find it within themselves to move. It’s this polarity of cause and response, inventive action spurred by repulsed reaction, that led writer Lindsay Zoladz to call them “one of the most vital rock bands working today” in her Slate column at the end of 2018.

Today, the band announces “On Time,” a concert livestream and retrospective in celebration of the 10th anniversary of their first show. The show, filmed live at Brooklyn’s Pioneer Works, will air on December 10th, commemorating their first show ever, which took place at Monster Island on December 17th, 2010. It will feature rare archival footage, new interviews, exclusive merch available only to ticket buyers, and much more. The band adds: “Ten years ago our adventure began by playing our first show to virtually no one, and to celebrate we’ve decided to play a show to everyone, virtually.” Purchase advance tickets here.

In conjunction, Parquet Courts unveil the classically jittery “Hey Bug,” a previously unreleased track that came from “Sunbathing Animal” LP session.

“If I remember correctly, it would have been recorded at Seaside Lounge in Brooklyn, during the fall of 2013.  We were working there with our pal Jonathan Schenke, who had recorded Light Up Gold, but this time in a studio rather than a practice space,” says A. Savage. “We’d have been recording material for “Tally All the Things That You Broke” and Sunbathing Animal.  Editing the sequence for a record is often a tough process, and when it’s over it’s typically such a relief that I’ll purge it from my memory entirely.  And now I’m listening to ‘Hey Bug’ these seven years later and thinking what a cool song it is.  That period was a frenzy of writing and I know it’s not the only unreleased song from that session.  So here you are, our lone musical contribution in the year 2020: ‘Hey Bug’ (recorded 2013).”

    Praise for Parquet Courts

“Parquet Courts offer a fine testament to rock’s continued power and relevance.”Pitchfork

“the most exciting young rock band in America” Rolling Stone

“These musicians are self-styled rock traditionalists at a time when tradition is in short supply… you could call them a New York heritage band, if such a thing exists today.” New York Times

“It’s workmanlike rock…rock molded to make you shake and rattle and roll; rock to enhance or expel the rage and despair you feel about everything that exists outside your front door.” GQ

“Originality in rock music has never been about creating something out of nothing. It’s about creating something out of a previous something and making that new something feel young, vibrant, and sexy. This is what Parquet Courts does exceedingly well.” Grantland

SUNDAY BEST RECORDINGS was founded by Sarah Bolshi and Rob da Bank in 2000. The label has always been renowned for its expansive roster and an unswerving dedication to the leftfield.

Rob originally ran Sunday Best as a leftfield London club night from 1995, hosting the now legendary DJs Fatboy Slim, Basement Jaxx and the sadly departed seminal icon Andrew Weatherall. Celebrating an ‘anything goes’ music policy, the club night formed an essential blueprint for Sunday Best the label. Rob went on to co-creat Bestival/Camp Bestival and presently broadcasts as a radio DJ on Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide FM after departing from BBC Radio One.

Bolshi cut her teeth working in A&R at Big Life Records, mentored by the legendary Jazz Summers (Manager to Wham, Soul II Soul, Lisa Stansfield etc) working on acts like The Orb and De Le Soul before establishing her first critically acclaimed breakbeat label Bolshi Records in 1996.  She is in the process of re-releasing the Bolshi catalogue digitally via the Sunday Best umbrella.

da Bank and Bolshi joined forces in 2000 building a roster over the last 20 years which included releases by the legendary film director David Lynch, Kitty Daisy and Lewis, dan le sac Vs Scroobius Pip, Valerie June (First LP) and more recently L.A. Salami, O’Flynn and JW Francis to name but a few.

His brand of lo-fi, utterly irresistible bedroom dream-pop takes its lead from the city JW lives in, with echoes of Jonathan Richman, The Velvet Underground and the lo-fi sound New York has been inspiring for decades.

    The first single to be released by Sunday Best is the glorious and appropriately titled ‘New York’, serving as the perfect introduction to JW Francis, with its infectious guitar lines, lo-fi vocals and accompanying retro visual;

“I’m a licensed tour guide of NYC. This place has taught me so much. I wanted to write an homage, but also express how I feel, which is mostly contained in the first line of the song ‘I’ll sleep when dead’”

The DIY mentality is key throughout JW Francis’ output and he’s been working hard at it over the last 2 years, playing a total of 72 shows across 19 different states and 5 different countries – the unusual factor being that having asked fans in each city to form a different backing band for him at every show, he now has bands in L.A, San Francisco, Paris, Glasgow, New York & Costa Rica.

This is the band’s first-ever Grammy nomination, and comes on the heels of a #2 debut on the UK charts (behind only Taylor Swift), and some of the best reviews of any album released this year. Listen to the seething, surreal title track, accompanied by a music video starring Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones, The Wire).

Last week Fontaines D.C. performed stripped-down versions of ‘A Hero’s Death’ highlights “I Don’t Belong” and “Oh Such A Spring” in Paris for La Blogothèque.

    Praise for ‘A Hero’s Death’:

“Heady, funny, and fearless, the Dublin band’s second album is a maudlin and manic triumph, a horror movie shot as comedy, equal parts future-shocked and handcuffed to history.” – Pitchfork (8.1)

“If Dogrel showed that they can be big, then A Hero’s Death shows that they can be whatever the hell they want. Fontaines D.C. are dead; long live Fontaines D.C” – Stereogum ‘Album of the Week’

“Exceptional” – The Guardian ‘Album of The Week’

    “A resounding victory” – Q

Domino are delighted to be celebrating the 10-year anniversary of These New Puritans’ Hidden with Hidden [MMXX] – a re-issue of the original album in its full glory accompanied by new and unreleased material from the Hidden sessions alongside live recordings from the same era, plus a new live film.

As the These New Puritans canon has grown through the years, Hidden has always stood as the great indicator of the group’s detail, precision and ambition. Originally released in 2010, when both Jack and George Barnett were just 22 years old, Hidden was the second album the twins released as These New Puritans.

The album itself was produced by TNP’s Jack Barnett and Graham Sutton (Bark Psychosis, Boymerang) and mixed by Dave Cooley (J Dilla, MF DOOM), it draws on both the rhythmic lexicons of dancehall and 20th century post-minimalism, the recording features 6ft Japanese Taiko drums, a thirteen piece brass and woodwind ensemble, sub-heavy beats, prepared piano & a children’s choir. The result is equal parts brutal and melancholy, standing the test of time, sounding as pioneering and bold a decade on.

Hidden is a record that crushes together menace and beauty: after the prelude of woodwind that is “Time Xone”, “We Want War” remains one of the most startling tracks to be released as a single in this millennium – a sound like swarms of invading, metallic wasps, robotic voices intoning, the martial rattle of layers of drums, Jack Barnett’s vocals an incantation. The militant funk of “Three Thousand”, strange skittish jazz in “Hologram”, and “Drum Courts – Where Corals Lie” feels like an ancient, elegiac folk song carried forth on a storm. A record of intense variety, soul and depth, Hidden is remarkable by anyone’s standards, let alone one made by a group of people barely out of their teens.

Through the extremes of recording, These New Puritans had a critical hit. It was rightly lauded for its singularity and adventure at the time and found the group a legion of loyal fans and was given NME’s prestigious Album of the Year 2010 accolade. Further to the record, it spawned the Hidden Live tour, featuring a large ensemble, conductor Andre De Ridder, and a kids choir.
