David Potts, 19, began his musical career working as an assistant engineer at Suite 16, the Rochdale studio owned by Peter Hook of New Order fame. Whilst Peter was recording the album One True Passion, David was invited to join Revenge, Peter’s side project in 1990. As a live second bassist and then guitarist, they toured extensively and co-wrote the 1992 EP Gun World Porn on Factory Records.
After Peter returned to New Order to complete 1993’s Republic album, David and Peter continued on as a two-piece, Monaco, with Peter on bass guitar and vocals, and David on vocals, guitar, drums and keyboards. They recorded the hit What Do You Want From Me? in 1997, which reached No.11 on the British music charts. The album Music For Pleasure also reached No.11 and produced two more hit singles, Sweet Lips and Shine. The album was also very well received in the US and Europe.
Monaco was then let go from Polydor Records in favour of a new flavour of boy/girl pop bands. The self-titled follow-up was quickly picked up by Papillon Records (Chrysalis) receiving excellent reviews but lacking any real backing. The tracks I’ve Got A Feeling and See Saw were lifted as singles receiving more popularity in Europe than the UK. After touring the UK and Europe David and Peter decided to call it a day.
Peter, again, returned to New Order and David was contacted by Noel Gallagher to rehearse with the band on bass. David later said that although the band was “a charming bunch of lads”, he wanted to be his own boss.
David under the name RAM, received lots of positive press for his psychedelic-influenced pop/rock sound. His Songs on Page One EP, For Your Love EP and I’m The Greatest were critically acclaimed. His solo album, entitled Coming Up For Air, was released 29 January 2007 in the UK and Japan with double A-side single Monkey in the Rain / Roll Up! were released in August 2007.
After a hiatus from music and a spell living in Paris, David met up with Peter who was playing with Section 25 in Paris. He then very soon became a full member of Peter Hook & The Light.
2025 saw a return to prolific ways with the release of two simultaneously self-released albums entitled The Red Tree and The Blue Tree along with a single Drowning, My Satellite EP, Show Me Love Show Me Life EP, I Think It’s Gonna Rain EP and Run EP.
Also, in 2025 Music On Vinyl gave both Monaco albums a makeover on double coloured vinyl gatefolds with extra tracks that flew out almost immediately.
David continues to write and tour extensively worldwide with Peter Hook and The Light.
