Domino Music for Film + TV team have experience in film production since 1993 and keen to help you throughout your production. We are also here to protect and serve our music creators. Working together we can make some inspiring soundtracks that sustain in the minds of film and TV audiences. We’ve put some advice here as to when is a good time to get in touch with Domino so we can help to sort out your music needs.
DEVELOPMENT
The start of a Production varies but generally will begin with development of a script, a book, a brief story outline or pitching an idea to a Producer. If your story hinges on the lyric or the appearance of a specific Domino song do feel welcome to contact us to check its viability. We are happy to read scripts to make suggestions about music you might want to budget for.
PRE-PRODUCTION
This is the planning phase before the camera’s start to film where a producer and their team work out the shoot location and casting. The Producer will likely work with a Line Manager or Production Manager to create the schedule and budget for the film. If your story hinges on the lyric or the appearance of a specific Domino song do feel welcome to contact us to check the budget for licensing the song and how long it might take to get approval. Generally for films and TV shows, we will be happy to wait for the post production stage for you to decide if you actually want to use a song and we will not bind you to an agreement until picture lock. Our quotes are usually limited to 1 month – but do ask us if you need longer due to the production schedule and we will do our best to be flexible. Do ask to join our mailing list for music updates or send us a music brief so you have time to listen to selections of music that suit your budget for when you’re ready to go into post-production.
PRODUCTION
Usually whilst a film or TV show is being shot, we wouldn’t usually expect to be contacted for music licensing unless there’s a scene which requires a song to be cleared for a featured use where characters are performing to the song. If you need clearances for featured usage, communicate your deadlines to us we will do our best to get back to you quickly. We know in production that communication is key between location, set, office, production company, distributors – we’re also aware things go wrong. If you have songs that are cut out of scenes we’re happy to try to replace them. We also realise that budgets get cut in this process. The more Domino songs you use the more we can offer a solution.
POST PRODUCTION
We know the bulk of post-production consists of reviewing the footage and assembling the movie – editing with contributions from a wide range of stakeholders – from Visual Effects (VFX), grading and Sound Design. With your budget, media, timeline and creative brief Domino can create a pre-clearance of songs or we can work in a timely manner to process music requests. We know that film makers and producers are under pressure, however, we also have to look after the needs of our musicians so the more information you can supply ahead of post-production the more satisfying the music clearance process.
DISTRIBUTION
Once the film is completed, and the film will go into the cinema and/or be distributed via various platforms such as Amazon Prime, Netflix, and HBO – you will find that you needed rights which perhaps you had not thought of in advance. If you are working with distributors who have expectations of rights clearances, please notify us of this so we can use the relevant pro-formas to give you the best value out of a license. The biggest touch points are warranties, indemnities, assignment clauses and break clauses. The clearance process is intended to protect the value of our music community but also to ensure that you as a producer or film maker get the value out of your license agreement with Domino in order for you to create a unique and cult soundtrack that serves your distributors and audience.
